Clothing equipment for newborns

What will you need for your newborn? What clothes and in what quantity? We will help you with a practical list of things for a newborn.

Moms during pregnancy tend to have the so-called "nesting syndrome". Even before the baby is born, they start to prepare their baby's equipment and "nest", i.e. a nursery for their baby.

What clothes will the baby really need?

Mothers often can't resist beautiful baby clothes and in a rush of joy and hormones, they shop everything. What does a basic set for a baby consist of?

It makes a difference if the baby is born in the summer or winter months. Babies grow fast and we don't know in advance what size of clothes the baby will need in half a year's time. Therefore, it is advisable to buy clothes only for about two to three months in advance.

Baby born in summer or winter

For a baby born in summer, clothing made of light materials and with short sleeves is typical.

For a baby born in winter, we choose clothes with long sleeves and multiple layers.

It also all depends on how often the mum will wash the baby's clothes so that she has clean clothes available.

The basic equipment for babies should include:

  • Cotton shirt 3-4 pcs
  • Bodysuit - short / long sleeve 3-4 pcs
  • Footie trousers or comfortable trousers 2-3 pcs
  • Thinner jacket or sweater 1-2 pcs
  • Warm jacket 1-2 pcs
  • Hat 1-2 pcs
  • Thinner and thicker socks 3-4 pcs
  • Footies 4-5 pcs
  • Sunsuit for babies born in summer 2 pcs
  • Overalls that can also serve as pyjamas 2-3 pcs
  • Anti-scratch gloves 1-2 pcs
  • Children's thighs 1-2 pcs
  • Warm upper clothing for children born in winter - winter overall 1 pcs

The mom will find out for herself over time what suits her best. Some mothers prefer wrap-over bodysuits for newborns, which are easier to put on and therefore cause less stress for the baby. There are moms who won't use a cotton baby shirt at all and start straight with a baby bodysuit in the smallest size.

It's all about keeping the mom and baby as calm as possible. So that they don't stress unnecessarily when dressing and changing. So that they have plenty of baby clothes in case of need and maybe even in case of a little accident.

When choosing children's clothing, be careful

Many shops and e-shops offer cheap clothes for babies that are beautifully photographed. This encourages mums to buy without checking the materials the clothes are made of.

Baby clothes should meet strict European standards and should have the relevant certificates.

Babies' skin is very sensitive and therefore baby clothes that come in direct contact with the baby's skin should be from a verified supplier. Such clothing must not contain harmful and dangerous substances. These can cause various skin reactions and even poisoning.

If possible, check the manufacturer or supplier, even for donated items, and wash all children's clothing in detergent intended for children before use.

We sew our JAPI clothes only from certified materials.
